Recovery From Trauma or Abuse: It’s Not Just Physical

Many people don’t realize it, but physical and mental recovery are both linked together. You literally cannot have one without the other, especially if you have been through both physical and emotional abuse.

The recovery process after escaping a traumatic living situation is a hard, complicated and often lonely road. Yet it is still quite possible for you to be able to heal from the abuse you have endured and live a relatively peaceful life. It all starts with your mental condition once you determine that you are ready to start the recovery process. If you start trying to heal from damaging experiences while still telling yourself in your mind that you are an absolute worthless failure, you really are not going to get anywhere in the recovery process. You need to be strong enough to understand that what happened to you wasn’t your fault and to move on into the unknown future. It will be out of your comfort zone, as abuse and trauma is all that you are used to, but you will adjust quickly as long as you ensure that physically there is nothing in your environment to remind you of the dark times you went through.

Really, it’s not that hard to come out of the fear and depression that engulfs you after you escape trauma or abuse. As long as you concentrate on making sure that you have a safe, supportive environment and don’t have anything in your life that will drag you back, you can make your recovery quick and relatively easy. Just take the time to mentally clear things out and make sure that your surroundings are not contributing to the unavoidable negative energy that you will experience in life.

This is completely normal, as you are experiencing a huge transition in your life. Recovery from Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Today I want to talk about a different kind of recovery. The recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Substance use disorder affects millions of people all over the United States. But just like recovery from an injury, going through recovery from an addiction is difficult. Every day, you have to work your “sobriety muscles” until you get stronger and stronger in a clean lifestyle.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a negative stigma associated with the treatment of addiction in this country. This doesn’t make any sense. We don’t judge those who are recovering from injuries so why do we judge those who are recovering from addictions and substance use disorder? We don’t judge diabetic patients who need treatment so why should we judge those who have the disease of addiction?

If you have a drug or alcohol addiction, one of the hardest things to do is to admit that you need outside help. But most people cannot get better on their own. There is no shame in admitting this. You are taking the first step to getting your life back, and that’s definitely a good thing.

So what can you do if you discover that you need help? First, you need to find treatment. This may mean inpatient treatment or outpatient treatment. If you are addicted to a substance that also causes physical dependence — like alcohol, opiates, or benzodiazepines — you may also need medically supervised detox. After you have successfully completed a rehab program, you need to join some type of recovery program like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or SMART Recovery. Full Recovery

Everyone who is into sports have to experience how it is when you get injured. It is not nice, it is very hard, it brings a whole lot of troubles with it and it affects the athlete both physically and mentally. Recovery is not easy either and it takes a lot of effort, time but most of all strong will and positive thinking in order for an athlete to get back on track and continue with doing what they love the most


There is one painful truth about recovery, it can be more painful and hard than all the previous workout. Getting fitter is not easy by itself, there is no question about it, but, full recovery after getting seriously injured as an athlete can be more challenging than all the workout put together. There is one good thing that comes from it though, the moral victory of coming out as a winner.

Most of the time, athletes who manage to fully recover from getting injured, come back twice as decisive than ever before and they start scoring higher than ever before. You could say that getting injured helped them to become better but you would be wrong. It did not help them to become better, it simply showed them what they were missing on while recovering and that is the most important aspect of the recovery process.

That mental fight with yourself will result in two things, either you will quit or you will work harder than ever. Full recovery is about restoring balance to your life. Homeostasis is very important for the athletes who are looking to get back into sports. That is why homeostasis or the period of recovery is where you need to regain the balance and get all your body systems in order.

Through this repair, through this mental fight, you hope that you will become stronger than before which will allow you to become a better athlete. The level of fitness determines the duration of the recovery period. There is no rushing this as the body has its own tempo of regeneration.

Professional athletes and sportsmen get injured just like anyone else. When this occurs, some injuries require surgical intervention. This can be fatal to their careers but it does not have to be necessarily so. The recovery process after the intervention greatly depends on the mental health of the athlete.

Many of them will battle with dark thoughts how their lives are over, how all the invested time was a big fail and they got nothing done despite all the investment. They will be greatly disappointed with themselves and with life in general. Still, there is one good thing in this. Professional athletes have whole teams of experts available to them that will guide them through the whole process and convince them that it is totally normal to get injured in their line of work and that it happens even to the best.

This sort of thinking can reflect very positively on the mental health of the athlete, giving him the much needed and necessary strength to push forward and move away from the unfortunate event. The injury

People who are really into sports, tend to dedicate all their lives to what they love the most. So, when they get injured, it reflects badly on their shape and body and on their mental health as well. This is not only about feeling pain, this is about feeling helpless because of being unable to do what makes you happy the most.
